In Martirene’s artwork, architecture, materials, and geometry interact with light, evolving into a language that speaks of stories or simply proposes a focal point that captures one’s gaze and evokes ideas that suggest more than what is seen.
Martirene Alcántara has a romance—several, in fact—but the most profound is with architecture, and photographing it is her form of courtship. Like any true passion, her romance does not wane in intensity over time; it merely changes its manifestations. In this Poetic Act, she moves through spaces, drawing from each its essential elements to create her images. Gradually, she has stripped structures down to their fundamentals, crafting compositions that establish connections within the imagination. Emerging from the tangible, they suggest new forms and interpretations, inviting the viewer on a journey of their own.
Martirene’s mastery transforms architectural elements, whether of stone or light, into imaginary structures. It doesn't matter where they come from—what matters is what they become.
For over 25 years, Martirene has photographed Luis Barragan's architecture, particularly his house, which she considers his greatest work —Barragán for Barragán.
