Homage to Luis Barragán

Martirene Alcántara has a romance, in fact, several simultaneously, but one of the strongest is with architecture, and to photograph it is her form of courtship. Her romance, combined with great passion, does not diminish in intensity with time; it evolves, manifesting in new forms. In Luis Barragán’s masterful way of designing spaces through light and volume, Martirene’s eye creates ethereal images, based on the encounter between the permanence of architecture and the ephemeral nature of light, showing the transformation of the material into the intangible. In this Act of Poetry, Martirene traverses spaces and takes from each essential elements to create her astounding images. Gradually, she strips away the extraneous, leaving only the fundamental. Her art pieces connect with the imagination, beginning with the concrete, yet suggesting new forms and interpretations that offer a new journey in the imagination of the viewer. For over 25 years, Martirene has photographed Barragán’s architecture, particularly his house, which she considers his greatest work—Barragán for Barragán. In her architectural photography, she creates imaginary spaces from structural elements she gathers here and there, elements of stone, or elements of light, no matter where they come from; what matters is what they become.
